We’d slept too late, tangled in white sheets that still smelled faintly of sunscreen and last night’s perfume. The scent of the ocean drifted through the open windows, mingling with espresso and citrus as someone sliced a peach in the kitchen below.

From the terrace, the world felt suspended.
Bougainvillea bloomed like fire, and below us, the water — that unreal, crystalline St. Tropez blue — shimmered like glass, untouched. Boats rocked lazily in the cove. A linen cover-up flapped on a railing. Nothing needed to happen yet.
